GP Yellow Resin for Door Skin Manufacturing

Moulded FRP door skins need a laminating resin that wets out reinforcement cleanly behind a gelcoat-finished face — GP Yellow Resin fills that structural role with the same cure chemistry as GP Clear Resin, in a thicker, slower-gelling grade.

A door skin is the moulded face panel that gives an FRP door its finished look — the raised panel design, wood-grain texture or flush profile buyers actually see. Many producers apply a gelcoat or surface layer first for finish quality, with the structural laminate built up behind it; GP Yellow Resin, Samrat FRP Traders' general-purpose orthophthalic laminating resin, can serve that structural role using the same MEKP and cobalt octoate cure system as our GP Clear Resin. What manufacturers build

Door skin manufacturers produce moulded FRP panels in a range of profiles — flush, raised-panel, wood-grain-textured and custom designs — that are later bonded to a core material to form a complete door shutter, or sold directly to door assemblers. Skins are typically moulded as matched front-and-back pairs to standard door sizes.

Why this material suits the work

Where a gelcoat or surface layer is applied to the mould first, the visible finish of a door skin comes from that layer rather than the structural laminate behind it — and GP Yellow Resin's transparent yellow tint carries no functional downside in that role, using the same MEKP/cobalt cure system as GP Clear Resin. For skins moulded without a separate finish layer, where the base resin's own flow and clarity determine how well fine wood-grain texture or panel detail reproduces, GP Clear Resin's lower 350–450 cPs viscosity flows into fine mould detail more readily than GP Yellow Resin's thicker 450–600 cPs body, and its colourless finish avoids any yellow tint showing through. GP Yellow Resin is a workable choice behind a gelcoat or surface layer, or wherever its longer working time is useful; GP Clear Resin remains the better default for direct-finish skins relying on the resin's own clarity and flow.

Process context

Door skins are moulded face-down in a profiled mould. Where a gelcoat or surface layer is used, it is applied first for finish quality, followed by chopped strand mat wet out with GP Yellow Resin, catalysed by an MEKP hardener and cobalt octoate accelerator. The laminate is rolled to remove trapped air and ensure even thickness across the panel profile; its slower gel time gives a little more time to work resin into detailed panel profiles before it sets. Once cured at room temperature, skins are released, trimmed to size, and paired for use in door assembly.

Is GP Yellow Resin suitable for wood-grain-textured or fine-detail door skins?

It depends on how the skin is finished. Behind a gelcoat or surface layer, GP Yellow Resin's own colour and viscosity don't affect the finish. For direct-finish skins that rely on the base resin's own flow into fine mould texture without a separate surface layer, GP Clear Resin's lower viscosity flows into fine detail more readily and avoids any yellow tint showing through.

Should door skins be gelcoated before laminating with GP Yellow Resin?

Many producers apply a gelcoat or surface layer first for finish quality and colour, then laminate GP Yellow Resin and reinforcement behind it — the same approach commonly used with GP Clear Resin.

Why would a producer choose GP Yellow Resin instead of GP Clear Resin for door skins?

Is GP Yellow Resin the same as Lamination Resin (LR Resin) for door skins?

No. Lamination Resin (LR Resin) is formulated specifically for the fast-cycle bonding step that attaches a finished skin to a door core. GP Yellow Resin is a general-purpose resin used for the skin-moulding laminate itself, not that bonding step.

How is GP Yellow Resin catalysed for door skin production?

It is cured at room temperature with an MEKP catalyst (around 1.5%) and a cobalt octoate accelerator (0.3–0.5%), with dosage adjusted for the mould turnaround time each production run needs.
