Resin for FRP Door Manufacturing

FRP doors have largely replaced timber in bathrooms, utility areas and exterior applications where moisture would eventually warp or rot a wooden frame. The door itself is usually a sandwich construction — a core material faced with moulded door skins — bonded and reinforced with a polyester resin system that has to hold that assembly together permanently, through repeated opening, closing, humidity and temperature swings for the life of the door.

Process context

Door shutters are typically assembled by bonding moulded door skins to a core material with resin, then reinforcing the frame and edge sections with glass fibre laminate wet out with resin catalysed by an MEKP hardener and cobalt octoate accelerator. The assembled door is clamped or pressed while the laminate cures at room temperature, then trimmed, drilled for hardware, and finished. Frames are laminated separately over dedicated moulds before final assembly.
