Resin for Hand Lay-Up Process

Hand lay-up is the most common FRP fabrication method, and it depends on a resin that wets out reinforcement by hand without dragging or pooling.

Hand lay-up is the process behind more FRP products than any other manufacturing method — it's how most water tanks, panels, boat hulls, door skins and moulded parts are actually built, using nothing more than a brush or roller, resin, reinforcement and a mould. Its popularity comes down to low tooling cost and flexibility: the same basic technique can build a two-metre tank shell or a small decorative moulding, provided the resin behaves predictably in the fabricator's hands.

Process context

In hand lay-up, chopped strand mat or woven roving is placed into or against a mould, and resin catalysed with an MEKP hardener and cobalt octoate accelerator is applied by brush or poured on and worked through the reinforcement with a laminating roller. The roller removes trapped air and drives the resin fully through the fibre before it begins to gel. Additional layers are built up the same way until the required thickness is reached, then the part cures at room temperature before being released from the mould.
