A gelcoat is not a paint and it is not the laminating resin. It goes into the mould first, against the mould surface, and the glass-reinforced laminate is built up behind it. When the part is released, the gelcoat is the face the customer sees and the layer that takes the weather, the cleaning and the abrasion. Everything structural sits behind it.
The isophthalic distinction matters for the same reason it matters in laminating resin: the backbone resists water and hydrolysis better than a general-purpose orthophthalic one. In a gelcoat that shows up as gloss that holds longer and a surface less prone to blistering and dulling where the part is outdoors or permanently wet. A GP gelcoat is a reasonable choice for a sheltered indoor moulding; an ISO gelcoat is what the industry specifies for boats, water slides, bathware and external panels.

What this means for buyers
Surface layer, not a laminating resin
Gelcoat is applied into the mould before lamination and is not a substitute for the laminating resin behind it. Order the laminating resin, reinforcement and catalyst separately.
ISO where the surface is exposed
The isophthalic route is generally chosen where the moulded face has to keep its gloss outdoors or in permanently wet service. For sheltered indoor parts a general-purpose gelcoat may be sufficient — tell us the duty and we will discuss the options.

Is gelcoat the same as paint?
