Resin for FRP Moulded Gratings and Walkway Platforms

Choosing resin for moulded FRP gratings, walkway panels and trench covers — where a general-purpose grade is enough, and where the chemical area calls for isophthalic or vinyl ester.

The grating’s service area decides the resin, not the panel size.

FRP gratings are the walkways, platforms and trench covers that sit where steel grating rusts away: over effluent channels, around dosing and plating areas, on water and waste-water plants, and on structures near constant splash. They are moulded as a panel of interlocking bars — resin and chopped strand mat built up in a mould with square or rectangular openings — rather than fabricated from bar stock.

Two things decide the resin: what the grating stands in, and what the plant’s specification asks for. A walkway in a clean utility area is a general-purpose laminate. A platform in a chemical dosing room, or a trench cover over an effluent line, is where ISO Polyester Resin or Vinyl Ester Resin belongs.

What manufacturers build

Grating fabricators mould walkway and platform panels, stair treads, trench and drain covers, catwalk sections and hand-cut infill pieces, usually in standard panel sizes that are cut and fitted on site. The same shop often makes the handrails, kick plates and ladder sections that go with them.

Pultruded gratings and structural sections are a different process entirely — bars pulled continuously through a heated die rather than laminated in a mould. That work is covered by the pultrusion guide and uses Pultrusion Grade Resin (SPR 401 PT).

Why this material suits the work

A grating panel is a thick, resin-rich laminate with a lot of edge and corner detail, so the resin has to wet chopped strand mat out into narrow bar sections without starving the corners, and then cure through that thickness at workshop temperature. GP Clear Resin at 350–450 cPs with a gel time under 8 minutes and GP Yellow Resin at 450–600 cPs with a 10–15 minute gel time are the general-purpose grades for that; the thicker, slower grade helps when a full panel is laid up in one pass.

Where the grating stands in a wet or chemically active area, ISO Polyester Resin is the isophthalic laminating grade — 500 cPs, a 15-minute gel time, 40% styrene and a 90 °C heat deflection temperature in its TDS summary, which is resin data rather than a service limit. Vinyl Ester Resin is the route for chemical service beyond what a polyester laminate is specified for. All three cure at room temperature with MEKP hardener and cobalt octoate added separately.

Required resin characteristics

  • Wet-out into narrow bar sections and corners without dry spots at the intersections
  • A gel time long enough to fill and consolidate a whole panel in one pass
  • A controlled exotherm through a thick, resin-rich section
  • Chemistry matched to the area the grating serves — clean utility, wet, or chemically dosed
  • Clean release from a multi-cavity mould, run after run, without dressing the mould every cycle
  • Consistent colour where the grating is pigmented for safety marking

Process context

Panels are laid up in a grating mould: gelcoat or pigmented surface first where the finish calls for it, then chopped strand mat worked into each bar channel with resin catalysed by MEKP hardener and accelerated with cobalt octoate, added separately and never mixed together first. Layers are built up to the panel depth, consolidated so no air is trapped at the bar intersections, and cured at workshop temperature before demoulding, trimming and edge finishing.

Two process points decide most of the quality: dose the catalyst and accelerator for the shop temperature that day so a thick section does not run away on exotherm, and keep the mould release routine consistent so panels come out clean. FRP polyester pigment is added where the grating is coloured for safety marking, and GP Gelcoat Resin is used where a moulded surface finish is wanted.

Advantages

  • Corrosion resistance in the wet and splash areas where steel grating is replaced
  • Light enough to be lifted and cut on site without lifting gear
  • Non-conductive, unlike the steel grating it usually replaces
  • Colour through the laminate where pigment is used, so a scratch does not expose bare metal
  • Resin, reinforcement, pigment, catalyst and accelerator supplied together for Nepal

Common products

  • Moulded walkway and platform panels
  • Trench, drain and channel covers
  • Stair treads and catwalk sections
  • Handrails, kick plates and ladder sections made alongside
  • Infill pieces cut to fit around plant equipment

What the resin does not decide

A grating is specified by load class, span, deflection under load, open area and slip resistance. None of those comes from the resin alone — they come from the panel design, the bar depth and spacing, the glass content and the grating maker’s own testing. This site publishes no load table, span chart, slip rating or fire rating for a finished grating, and a plant specification asking for one should be answered with the fabricator’s test data rather than with resin data.

When to consider another resin

Common questions

Which resin is used for FRP walkway gratings?

For clean utility areas, a general-purpose orthophthalic grade — GP Clear Resin, or GP Yellow Resin where a bigger panel needs more working time. For wet or chemically active areas, ISO Polyester Resin, and beyond that Vinyl Ester Resin. The service area decides, not the panel size.

Can you tell me the load rating of a grating made with these resins?

No. Load class, span and deflection come from the panel design, bar depth, glass content and the fabricator’s testing. We supply the resin and the supplier’s technical documents for it; the load data belongs to whoever makes and tests the grating.

Moulded grating or pultruded grating — which do these grades suit?

These are the moulded-panel grades, laminated in a mould at room temperature. Pultruded bars and sections are pulled continuously through a heated die and use SPR 401 PT, which runs on a heat-activated peroxide system instead.

Do gratings need a gelcoat?

Not always. Many gratings are pigmented through the laminate instead, so a scratch does not show bare material. A gelcoat is used where a specific moulded surface or colour finish is wanted; confirm which you need before the first panel is moulded.
